Liz Partolan-Fray Memorial Scholarship for Education Abroad

This scholarship is designed to support underrepresented students to participate in international education.  Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to WWU students who are participating in a summer Global Learning program led by WWU faculty member.

Due to COVID-19, Global Learning Faculty-led Programs are cancelled through Summer 2021, therefore there will be no summer 2021 scholarship disbursement.

Liz Partolan-Fray served Western Washington University for more than 35 years.  First employed in the Multicultural Services Center, she advised international students, students with disabilities, veterans, and mature returning students.  Liz spent a lifetime advocating for those who were underrepresented at the University.  From developing policies to satisfy immigration regulations to teaching a course designed for students who were preparing to study abroad, Liz brought leadership and dedication to Western’s services for international and study-abroad students.  Liz was the Director of Education Abroad (formerly International Programs & Exchanges) in the Institute for Global Engagement from 1997 – 2016 and was passionate about increasing the number of students going abroad, especially from underrepresented groups.

  • Must be accepted and committed to a WWU Global Learning Faculty-led Program during summer.
  • Must have a 2.5 GPA.
  • Must identify with an underrepresented group in education abroad.
  • Must agree to participate in a campus presentation upon returning from the study abroad experience to promote international education.
  • Diversity Criteria: For the purpose of this scholarship, diversity is defined broadly. To be an underrepresented student in study abroad, diversity might include: being a first-generation university student, being from a rural community, having a diverse ethnic or racial background, students studying in non-traditional destinations (e.g., developing countries), having a physical or cognitive disability, having a diverse sexual orientation and/or gender identity, being of a non-traditional university student age, having high financial need, being a veteran, and more. Historically, even men and STEM students are significantly underrepresented in study abroad.
